March 2021 Preview
Hello pals! It’s March and spring is……on it’s way! Though we’re bemoaning the fact that this time last year your Pen Pals were together and that a year into quarantine a lot of parts of that trip feel laughably impossible (air travel??? movie theaters???? eating INSIDE RESTAURANTS??????) we’re continuously grateful for the ways this project has provided a slice of fun and thoughtfulness in a decidedly un-fun time for us and hope it’s been some measure of that for you as well.
Speaking of fun and thoughtfulness, for the March 2021 letter your Pals are going about 4 months back into the zeitgeist to talk about…..Ted Lasso!
If you’re on Twitter even a little bit you’ve almost certainly seen legions of Lasso-heads exalting the show many have referred to as a “warm hug.” (And they wonder why it took Kelsey so long to watch it!) This comedy about an exceedingly positive American football coach who is inexplicably hired to coach a British soccer/football team is on AppleTV+, which….lol sorry. Hannah loves it, Kelsey is afraid of the main character, it’s very funny, and there’s a lot of fascinating gender dynamics stuff for us to muse on.
Speaking of gender dynamics in film and TV, we enjoyed our awards rant last month so much that we’re gonna rant in the upcoming issue about our frustration with the limitations of trying to “measure” how feminist a given piece of media. Hot takery will abound!
Wishing you sunshine and an effective vaccine rollout in your region,
